Three Rockland schools have been identified by the state Education Department as needing academic improvement. Under the new federal “Every Student Succeeds Act,” Spring Valley and Ramapo High Schools in the East Ramapo school district and James Farley MIddle School in North Rockland need “support and improvement.”

Ramapo Girls’ School Denied Permit for Nanuet Church; Clarkstown to Hold Leaf Law Public Hearing Tonight
The permit application for a Ramapo girls’ school looking to move into Nanuet has been denied by Clarkstown’s building inspector. Clarkstown supervisor George Hoehmann says potential suitors for the Grace Baptist Church on Demarest Avenue were turned down due to various issues, including the potential increased traffic burden the school would cause for the neighborhood…
Hoehmann says the school could sue or file an appeal to get the variances they’d need to occupy the church. The sale of the church could fetch between 4 and 5 million dollars.
Also in Clarkstown, a landscaper licensing law will be on the town board agenda for a public hearing tonight. Hoehmann says too many people have been leaving their leaves in the street, illegally, for too long…
Tonight’s meeting gets underway at town hall at 7pm.
North Rockland’s State Senator Sworn-in at Orange County Middle School
North Rockland’s newest representative in the state Senate, James Skoufis, was sworn-in Sunday at the Monroe-Woodbury middle school, where he went as a young man. Skoufis told the crowd that everybody in his district will be treated the same way as everyone else…
In addition to North Rockland, Senator Skoufis’ district covers portions of Orange County.
Volunteers Needed to Help Count Homeless Population in Rockland County
A local organization is doing its annual count of the homeless in Rockland County this week, and they need volunteers to help out. Kathleen Lathrop of “Helping Hands of Rockland County” says the group does the “Point-in-time” count in a single, 24-hour period. That way, Lathrop says, the county can qualify for federal grant money from the Housing and Urban Development agency…
The count is being coordinated at four locations where volunteers will be needed: the United Church of Spring Valley, the Haverstraw Community Center, the All Souls Church in Suffern and the Veterans Service Center in New City. Volunteers will be needed for a 24-hour period from 7am on Thursday to 7am Friday. Former Spring Valley Police Chief, Adam Krainak, Dies at 97
Adam Krainak, a former Spring Valley village police chief and 70-year member of the Rockland Hook & Ladder Company in Spring Valley, died last week at the age of 97. Krainak was also a World War Two veteran. Visitation is Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home in Suffern. A funeral Mass will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in Spring Valley, with burial to follow at Ascension Cemetery in Airmont.
