Rockland Honors Blood Donors Ahead of Blood Donation Month in January

Rockland County Executive Ed Day yesterday donated a pint of blood while honoring area residents for their commitment to doing the same at a blood drive at the Health Complex in Pomona. Retired county employee Fred Cifuni has 141 blood donations under his belt, adding up to more than 17 gallons. Cifuni says if you’ve never donated blood before, rest assured, it’s not that hard…

Yadira Navarro is a director with New York Blood Center Enterprises, and she says blood donations are needed all year round, but especially this time of year…

The county also honored the Parish of St. Paul-St. Ann in Congers for contributing nearly 200 units of blood at its blood drives this year. The event was an early kick-off for National Blood Donor Month, which is in January.

According to the Associated Press, armed opposition groups launched a large-scale attack in northwestern Syria on areas controlled by government forces, ultimately concluding with President Assad’s ouster on December 8th, this past Sunday. Meanwhile, the moves prompted Israel, according to CNN, to launch airstrikes at military targets across Syria. They also deployed ground troops into and beyond a demilitarized buffer zone for the first time in 50 years, part of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s promise to change “the face of the Middle East.”

NY Governor Lashes Out at Social Media Response to Suspect in Health Care CEO Killing

New York’s governor lashed out at social media’s response in support of the alleged killer of the CEO of the nation’s largest health insurance company. 26 year-old Luigi Mangione, charged in New York with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is fighting extradition to the city after being caught Monday at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. At a press conference yesterday, Governor Kathy Hochul called the online cheering for Mangione abhorrent…

Appearing in Blair County Court yesterday, the Associated Press reported Mangione was given two weeks to file a petition for habeas corpus, challenging Pennsylvania’s ability to prove he is the person that is wanted in the state of New York. He remains in Pennsylvania, where he was denied bail. Prosecutors called him too dangerous to be released.

Stony Point Man Arrested, Charged with Interfering with Police Traffic Operations at Holiday Parade

A Stony Point man was arrested after allegedly getting upset at police officers for blocking the road during a holiday parade, preventing him from getting to his home. Stony Point Police Lieutenant Daniel Schoales says 41 year-old Cammeron Truesdale was upset while police were monitoring closed roads for the town’s and PAL’s annual Holiday Parade on Route 9W last Friday. Schoales says Truesdale got out of his car and began to argue with a Police Officer in the roadway near Route 210 and Central Highway. Schoales says he exhibited violent behavior, obstructing vehicular traffic and refusing several orders to leave the roadway. Schoales says Truesdale prevented the officer from conducting his traffic enforcement duties and resisted arrest by flailing his arms to keep from being handcuffed. He was charged with Obstructing Governmental Administration, Resisting Arrest, and Disorderly Conduct, released with an appearance ticket, and is due back in court next week.

Rockland County is hosting a blood drive today in Pomona. Blood is particularly critical during the holiday season. The drive is being held today from 9am-3pm at the Robert Yeager Health Center in Pomona in Building A.
