Funeral services have been set for a beloved North Rockland pastor. Father Thomas Francis Madden of St. Peter and St. Mary’s Church in Haverstraw died on Tuesday. A post on the church’s website said Father Madden passed away peacefully in Greenwich Hospital, surrounded by his family. Father Madden served Haverstraw for two decades. St. Peter and St. Mary Church at 115 Broadway in Haverstraw will host visitation on Friday from 3-7PM and Saturday from 10-11AM. Funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 11AM with a private burial to follow. Father Madden was 78 years old.

News Briefs: Spring Valley Man Charged with Murder, Two Fires Cause Injuries Sunday in Rockland
A Spring Valley man faces murder charges after a woman was found dead in their apartment early Friday morning after a welfare check. That’s according to News 12. 37 year-old Warle Fernandez-Arias pleaded not guilty Friday night after being charged with second degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Spring Valley Police said he allegedly stabbed 36-year-old Carolyn Canela in the back with a large kitchen knife in their Sneden Place West apartment. Spring Valley police ask anyone with information about the incident to contact them at at 845-356-7400. Fernandez-Arias is due back in court on Wednesday.
Injuries in Two Fires Sunday in Rockland
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries after an early-morning house fire yesterday in Spring Valley. It took place around 4:30 Sunday morning at 17 Slinn Avenue, with more than a dozen departments responding. No word on damage or the cause of the blaze. WABC-TV reported that 63 adults and 23 children were displaced due to the blaze, with some staying at the Louis Kurtz Center. News 12 says the Red Cross has a reception center open at 200 North Main Street to support anyone displaced due to the fire.
One person was injured after a fire at an apartment in West Nyack Sunday. News 12 reported the fire began in the kitchen of the 82 Demarest Avenue apartment. The resident was treated for burns to the hands.

The event is scheduled for 6:45pm tomorrow night at Haverstraw town hall. It was originally scheduled for the last Town Board meeting two weeks ago but was re-scheduled due to the snowstorm.
SPACE Marks 34th Anniversary
The Stony Point Action Committee for the Environment is marking 34 years of keeping an eye on the interests of North Rocklanders who care about the planet and their small corner of the world. George Potanovic is the President of SPACE, and says one of his proudest moments is when he and dozens of other groups combined their efforts to stop the local water company, United Water and Suez at the time, and the Haverstraw water supply project which included building a new water desalination plant…
That project was first conceived in 2006 and it took nearly a decade before it was abandoned. SPACE has also monitored commercial and residential development in the town.
