The Yankees yesterday announced that broadcasting legend John Sterling has retired, his last game was last week, a Yankee win against Toronto. Sterling joined the Yankees’ broadcast in 1989, calling 5,420 regular season and 211 post-season Yankees games. This season was his 36th in the booth, and 20th working alongside Suzyn Waldman. Five years ago, Sterling was the guest speaker at the Boulders Community Fund luncheon at the New York Country Club in Spring Valley. Sterling recounted a chance meeting one day with The Boss, George Steinbrenner…
Known for his thumping “The Yankees Win!” end-of-game pronouncements, his unique Yankee nicknames, and his “It is high, it is far, it is gone” home run calls, Sterling had taken on a reduced role in recent years and traveled less due to health concerns. Sterling will be recognized in a pregame ceremony at Yankee Stadium on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays.
