The Haverstraw African American Connection has secured a $200,000 grant to put a permanent statue of Harriet Tubman at the African-American Memorial Park off Clinton and Jefferson Streets. Haverstraw supervisor Howard Phillips says the new statue was inspired by the traveling version that came to town three years ago…
The head of the African American Connection hopes to have the new statue, called “The Beacon of Hope” ready in time for the Juneteenth celebration later this year. Tubman is best known for leading slaves to freedom via the Underground Railroad before the Civil War.
