A ceremony is being held Saturday in Spring Valley to honor two men for their efforts in fighting COVID-19 and social justice. Rockland Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick is honoring Nathan Mungin, the Executive Director of the Martin Luther King Multi-Purpose Center, and Willie Trotman, President of the Spring Valley chapter of the NAACP. The ceremony also is in celebration of Juneteenth, which marks the day that news of liberation came to Texas more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on January 1st, 1863. African-Americans across Texas were informed of their freedom when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to announce on June 19th, 1865, that all slaves were free.
