Two upstate New York lawmakers announced a new bill yesterday that would delay the implementation of the governor’s criminal reform package for a year. Senator Jim Tedisco and Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh, both from the Schenectady area, want to hold statewide hearings to hear from criminal justice experts, victims, victims’ advocates, domestic violence prevention advocates and others before the reforms can be enacted. Rockland and Westchester state senator David Carlucci, a backer of the reform package, has been meeting with local law enforcement and says the governor seems to have been caught off-guard by recent push-back on the law…
Al Samuels heads up the Rockland Business Association, and says it might be tough getting lawmakers from the city on board with the delay…
Western Ramapo and Orange County assemblyman Karl Brabenec also announced new legislation yesterday, but his would repeal the criminal justice reform package in its entirety. He called it “a slap in the face to all law-abiding New Yorkers that felons will now be given priority over victims.”
