The emergence of an unofficial, volunteer fire-fighting group in the Monsey area has local officials concerned for residents’ safety. The group has reportedly suggested calling them before calling 911 in case of an emergency. In a post on Facebook, Rockland County Executive Ed Day called that “beyond dangerous,” noting that any delay in calling 911 risks residents’ lives, the lives of the untrained “fire brigade” and the real firefighters who then need to deal with a blaze that has become more involved. Monsey already has a well-trained fire company, Brewer Engine 1, whose volunteers train at the Rockland Fire Training Center in Pomona.
