Budgets passed last night in every Rockland County school district by wide margins except for, perhaps predictably, East Ramapo Central. The budget there failed by about 400 votes: 1,917 “no” votes to 1,519 “yes” votes. The Journal News reported that the increased tax levy for residents there would have been around two percent. These results are all unofficial at the moment. No word yet as to what happens next. Find full results and Board Member Elections here, courtesy of Lohud.com.
Stony Point PD Search for Suspect in Alleged Home Invasion Incident
No reported injuries after a shot was reportedly fired during an armed robbery at a North Rockland home late Monday night. Stony Point Police Lieutenant Greg Becker says they got a call around 9:40pm from a man who said someone tried to shoot him during a home invasion. When police arrived at the Dickens Street home, Becker says they found the man who said two men wearing ski masks confronted him as he entered his garage. Becker says one of the men had displayed a firearm, and during a struggle, a shot was fired. A handgun was located at the scene and secured by police. Becker says one of the suspects was caught shortly after fleeing the scene. Becker says 34 year-old Julian Sanchez of the Bronx was charged with Burglary, Robbery, and several other charges. Police are looking for another suspect, and possibly others, if you have information contact the Stony Point Detective Bureau at 845-786-2422.
NYS Thruway Repaving Project in Orange County Underway
A $36.6 million pavement improvement project is now underway in Orange County on the New York State Thruway. The work covers 12 miles north of exit 16 in the Harriman-Woodbury area up to exit 17 in Newburgh at I-84. Around 53,000 vehicles travel this area in both directions each day. In addition to putting in a new asphalt surface, the work includes safety improvements like new guide rails, joint repairs, and reflective line striping. Paving operations will be done weekdays overnight to reduce daytime traffic issues. It’s expected to be done by the end of the year.
Upstate Bridges Get Recycled Pieces from TZB
Two bridge replacement projects in the western southern tier of New York will have a little slice of the Hudson Valley in them, thanks to recycling. The old Tappan Zee Bridge will live on in bridges along state Route 248 over Sugar Creek and Bennett’s Creek in the Town of Canisteo, in Steuben County. Governor Kathy Hochul announced last week the $10 million investment will incorporate recycled components from the old Tappan Zee Bridge, to help strengthen these bridges and help them better withstand storms, and expand access to pedestrians and cyclists. By using deck panels of the old Tappan Zee Bridge, Hochul says time and costs were reduced.
