The state Department of Taxation and Finance says you can’t grieve assessments from prior years, only the current assessment. There is no cost to grieve an assessment and you don’t have to hire a lawyer. In general, the deadline, called Grievance Day, is the fourth Tuesday in May, but you should confirm the date with your assessor or municipality.
