Everyone loves those loud, obnoxious motorcycle and car mufflers that were illegally modified to sound like that, right? Wrong! Of course, they don’t! And neither does the state legislature, or the governor. On Friday, Kathy Hochul signed a bill that raises the penalties against motorists and repair shops that illegally modify mufflers and exhaust systems to be so loud that they wake you out of a sound sleep from a mile away…
New York City Councilman Justin Brannan supported the bill, which was sponsored by a Brooklyn state senator, and says sometimes the cars are so loud, it’s scary…
The “Stop Loud and Excessive Exhaust Pollution” or SLEEP Act, raises the maximum fine for installing illegal equipment from $150 to $1,000. Inspection stations will also be required to make sure motorcycle mufflers and exhaust systems have not been illegally modified. Repair shops caught installing illegal exhausts three times in 18 months could lose their certificate of inspection.
