If you’re an inmate in the New York State prison system you may just be in luck. According to the Associated Press, some prisoners will be released early because the system does not have enough corrections officers. This comes just weeks after the state fired more than 2,000 guards who went on strike over poor working conditions and didn’t return to work when a settlement was reached. Earlier this week the Commissioner of Corrections asked prison administrators to identify inmates who were convicted of minor crimes, and already set for release within 15 to 110 days, to be considered for early release. Those convicted of sex crimes, or violent felonies including murder, terrorism and arson would not be eligible.
