The Nyack School District is asking for the public to help decide what the new school mascot will be. The Mascot Committee wants the new name to bring pride and excitement to the entire Nyack community. They’ve posted a survey on the school district’s website, and the list of suggested mascots includes the Bear Cats, the Mustangs, the River Hawks, the Thunderbirds, and 11 others. The responses to the survey will be presented to the Board of Education. The Board voted unanimously last month to officially retire the “Nyack Indians” name after the nation was gripped with protests over racial issues. The district stopped using an Indian mascot logo 17 years ago but kept the name.
