Nanuet Roofing Contractor Charged with Employee’s Death in New Square
A Nanuet roofing contractor was arrested yesterday and charged in the death of an employee last year. The Southern District of New York and the Department of Labor say 40 year-old Jose Lema, owner of ALJ Home Improvement, was charged with violating OSHA regulations, resulting in the employee’s death while working in New Square in February last year. The unidentified victim reportedly fell 30 feet off the roof of a three-story multi-family apartment building that was under construction. They say he was wearing a safety harness, but nothing else connected him to the roof. This was reportedly not the first time something like this happened. Another death occurred in 2019 in Kiamesha Lake. Since then, OSHA has investigated ALJ worksites eight times, resulting in dozens of citations and more than $2.3 million in penalties. In the New Square case, Lema faces one count of “violating OSHA residential construction fall protection standards” and if found guilty, he could spend six months in prison and be fined $250,000.
