The Rockland County Department of Health has found additional groups of mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile Virus. The mosquito population has been on the rise over the last two weeks, which the Health Department says can increase the risk of contracting mosquito-borne diseases. No human cases have been reported in the county so far this season. The last reported human case in Rockland was last year. Not everyone infected with West Nile Virus gets sick, and though your chances of getting sick are small, those 50 and older and those with compromised immune systems are at the highest risk for serious illness. If you have concerns about mosquitoes, call the Health Department at 845-364-3173. You can also visit the county’s Mosquito Control or the state’s West Nile websites.
