Rockland honored two “super seniors” last week for their long-time service to the community. Winsome Downie Rainford was named “2022’s Senior of the Year” for her 42 years as a political science teacher and for serving on the Spring Valley Martin Luther King Multi-Purpose Center’s Board of Directors. She’s also been a Helping Hands Homeless Program volunteer, and an officer in the Jamaican Civic and Cultural Association of Rockland (JAMCCAR) since its founding 32 years ago. Mamta Arya was awarded the “2022 Outstanding Contribution by a Senior Citizen.” An Indian immigrant, she earned her master’s degree and spent 15 years working with people with mental illness, substance abuse, and special needs. She also launched her own non-profit group “Jeevan Jyoti,” that offers free programs for seniors, including learning new skills or how to take care of their aging body and mind.
