A new Rockland County law will warn gun buyers of the potential dangers of purchasing firearms. The county legislature unanimously passed the law requiring signs to be posted wherever firearms are sold in Rockland. The signs warn that access to guns in the home significantly increases the risk of suicide, homicide, and death during domestic disputes, and the risk of accidental deaths of children and others. The labels will include contact information for the National Suicide Hotline. The Center for Gun Violence at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health says 48,117 people died by firearms in 2022, an average of one death every 11 minutes. Around 27,000 of them died by suicide, nearly 20,000 died by homicide, and 472 were accidents. In June, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued a warning declaring firearm violence in America to be a public health crisis.
