Rockland has reported its first human case of West Nile virus this season. The county health department says a Ramapo resident over 50 years old recently tested positive for the mosquito-borne illness. The health department wants you to protect yourself from mosquito bites and check your property continuously for standing water where mosquitoes breed. While your chances of getting sick are small, those 50 and older are at the highest risk for serious illness. If you have a swimming pool or spa that is not in use, you can get Mosquito Dunks for free from the Health Department, Building D in Pomona. They’re available by appointment only, while supplies last, until October 31st. Call 845-364-3173 or send them an e-mail to arrange a pickup, or click here to learn more about the program.
