An area lawmaker is concerned with the safety of the new Tappan Zee bridge following a bombshell report by an upstate newspaper. The Albany Times Union says extensive research indicated the state knew about potentially problematic bolts but covered up the issue and tried to silence a whistleblower. Rockland state senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick says he’s been assured the bridge is safe…
The Albany Times Union’s extensive report suggests there were problems with bolts used to hold some girders together that had broken. It also suggests there’s been an alleged cover-up of the problem by the administration. The bridge’s project director told The Journal News “the bridge has been and continues to be safe.”
Meanwhile, an area lawmaker wants the bridge that kind of bears the governor’s name to get its old name back. Rockland Assemblyman Mike Lawler told News12 the allegations against Andrew Cuomo make it clear that the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge should go back to being the Tappan Zee Bridge, and he’s introduced legislation to make it official.
