Calls to many Rockland fire departments were on the rise yesterday citing the outdoor smoke conditions. The smell and view of smoke from fires in Canada increased yesterday afternoon, even making a notable appearance in the Bronx yesterday during the Yankee game. CNN reported the New York City area at times yesterday had the worst or second-worst air quality conditions, globally. At least 10 school districts in the state canceled outdoor activities and events Tuesday. The World Health Organization warns wildfire smoke contains very tiny particulate matter, and when inhaled, it can travel deep into lung tissue and enter the bloodstream. It’s been linked to a number of health problems including asthma, heart disease and other respiratory illnesses. In 2016, the W-H-O says there were around 4.2 million premature deaths due to fine particulate matter.
