A monitor appointed by New York State to keep tabs on the East Ramapo Central School District reported last week that the school board gave preferential treatment to Orthodox students that didn’t attend the public schools that were then inadequately funded. That’s according to several published reports. The monitor, Hank Greenberg, called the board’s fiscal management “abysmal” and noted the district is “on the precipice of fiscal disaster.” Greenberg recommended appointing a fiscal monitor who would be empowered to overrule the school board and superintendent if necessary while also providing additional funds to the district. Greenberg’s report apparently fell short, however, of calling for a state takeover of the district.
