A Dogwood tree was planted Wednesday in New City in honor of the 27th County Executive’s Outstanding Environmental Volunteer for 2024. Carolyn Hill was honored at Kennedy Dells County Park for her work protecting turtles near the border of Clarkstown and Orangetown on Western Highway. She and the group “Turtles of Western Highway” put up turtle crossing signs, encourage drivers to slow down and be aware of the turtles that often cross the road to nest, they repair fencing to prevent the turtles from crossing the road, and transport injured turtles for care. Thanks to Carolyn’s work, the local snapping turtle population has been preserved.
