Two local state lawmakers are introducing legislation to freeze the campaign accounts of elected officials who get impeached in the Assembly, and for the Board of Elections to liquidate their accounts upon conviction by the Senate. Rockland Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick and Westchester Assemblyman Chris Burdick, both Democrats, say the bill would only permit spending on legal defense fees. Currently that money could be used to influence other elected officials and organizations, the public, or on new political campaigns.
