Voters in the East Ramapo school district will use a ward system this February to elect members of the board of education. The Journal News says a federal judge replaced East Ramapo’s current at-large voting setup yesterday. U.S. District Court Judge Cathy Seibel ruled last May that the current system violated the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The Spring Valley chapter of the NAACP had challenged the at-large system, claiming it led to school boards that have been dominated by Orthodox Jewish men for the last decade.
